Smriti Irani (right) has become the new chairperson of Disha Committee in Rae Bareli. Sonia has now been made the co-chairperson.

Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi has suffered a major setback in Rae Bareli. Sonia was the chairperson of District Development and Coordination Monitoring Committee (DISHA) for the last 16 years. Now he has been removed from this post. In his place, Amethi MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani has been made the new Speaker. Disha is a committee dealing with the problems of rural areas.

Sonia now becomes co-chairperson
In the year 2019, after the BJP government came again at the center, Disha was formed in almost all the parliamentary constituencies. But the Ministry of Rural Development could not select the new chairperson and co-chairman of Disha for Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency. For this, in October 2019, the then DM Neha Sharma sent a letter to the Rural Development Commissioner. In which an appeal was made to announce the chairman and co-chairman for the direction. After long talks, now Smriti Irani has been made the chairperson and Sonia Gandhi has been made co-chairperson.

Committee meeting not held in 38 months
38 months have passed since the meeting of the Disha Committee took place in Rae Bareli district. This meeting should be held every three months under the chairmanship of the MP. The last meeting was held on 18 April 2018 under the chairmanship of Sonia Gandhi, MP from Rae Bareli. After this, the meeting was to be held on 2 November 2018 and 24 January 2019, which could not be held due to the cancellation of the MP’s program.
