Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has attacked the BJP over the population control bill. Tharoor on Saturday said the BJP was raising the issue of population for political gains. Its purpose is to target only and only one particular community.
Tharoor said about the Parliament session that on the issues on which the opposition wants to discuss with the government, the session is stopped by creating ruckus. The central government prefers to see the Parliament as a notice board, where they can only announce their laws and policies. Read this exclusive conversation with Shashi Tharoor…
Question: There is a debate going on across the country regarding population control, the bill is also ready in UP. What would you say?
answer: The ongoing debate about population is useless. Discussion on this has been going on for the last 50 years. The birth rate is stable in the states with a large share of the population. In the next 20 years, the biggest challenge before the country will be the elderly population, not the growing population. As far as the UP government is concerned, the BJP is raising the issue of population for political gains. Its purpose is to target only and only one particular community.
Question: It is discussed the most in UP, Assam and Lakshadweep, why?
answer: It is no coincidence that there is talk of population reduction in Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Lakshadweep, where everyone knows where the BJP intends to go. The Hindutva elements in our politics have not really studied demographic issues. Their motive is purely political and communal. Several BJP MPs are also preparing to introduce bills on population control and Uniform Civil Code in the upcoming monsoon session (July 19 to August 13).
Question: With what issues will the opposition surround the government in the monsoon session of Parliament?
answer: Corona’s mismanagement, vaccination policy, failure to resolve farmers’ agitation over agricultural legislation, growth rate, rising petrol-diesel prices, costly food items and rising unemployment are many issues. I say that the central government is so incompetent that there are many issues. We just need to lift it in public interest.
Question: How successful was the government in foreign affairs?
answer: The government is not giving correct information regarding the purchase of Rafale aircraft with France. An inquiry has been set up in France on this. Along with this, the government’s policy has failed in matters like border dispute with China, Afghanistan crisis.
Question: Will this session be peaceful?
answer: The government likes to see the Parliament as a notice board where they can only announce their laws and policies. You must have noticed that in any of the previous seasons, it has been the sole cause of uproar. The government has been avoiding issues through disruption.
Sessions are always interrupted by the ruling party’s refusal to discuss a specific issue of national importance. The opposition has no choice but to attract attention. I urge the government to have the courage to debate any issue.
