Just before the monsoon session of Parliament, questions have been raised on the citizenship of Minister of State for Home and MP from West Bengal Nishith Pramanik. On Friday, Assam Congress MP and state president Ripun Bora wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a probe into Pramanik’s birth place and nationality. Now Trinamool leaders have also raised this issue.

Bora, citing some media reports, said that he is a genuine Bangladeshi citizen. It is a matter of grave concern that a foreign national is a sitting Union Minister. He has requested Prime Minister Modi to clear the situation and investigate the matter. Bora had also shared a letter written to Modi.

BJP dismissed the allegations
Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu has supported Bora’s point of view, saying that he is asking the right questions. Another state minister Indranil Sen said he was surprised to learn that Union minister Nishith Pramanik could be a citizen of Bangladesh.

However, the BJP has rejected the allegation. Party’s West Bengal spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said let them show the evidence. Just ra ising a finger is not enough. No one has so far presented any evidence in the matter of Pramanik’s citizenship.

Controversy arose from the post from Bangladesh
Nishith’s citizenship was first questioned by a post made on social media. This post was made from Bangladesh. When Pramanik was made the Minister of State, in this post he was described as the successful son of Harinathpur in Gaibandha district of Bangladesh. Also wrote that he has studied computer science in West Bengal.

This post was done by an organization named Poojar Mela. It describes itself as a religious organization of Bangladesh. The post was later removed.

MP from Cooch Behar is authentic
The 35-year-old was inducted into the cabinet during the recent reshuffle in the Modi government. He is the youngest minister in this cabinet. His Lok Sabha bio states that his birth place is Dinhata in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. He has a graduation degree in Computer Application.

By the way, this is not the first time that the Cooch Behar MP has come into the limelight. Trinamool leaders have also raised questions on Nishith’s education qualification. More than 12 criminal cases including murder are also registered against him.
