There is now 4 days left in the ODI series between India and Sri Lanka. Earlier, the Sri Lankan team has started practicing. However, a unique picture has emerged from the ground during practice. Sri Lankan coaches wearing PPE kits, masks and gloves are making the team practice. This is happening for the first time in cricket.
A few days ago, Lankan team’s batting coach Grant Flower and data analyst GT Niroshan were found to be Corona positive. Along with this, a member of Sri Lanka’s alternate team was also found infected. Since then all the staff are scared. As a precautionary measure, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) has taken this decision.
Test report of Sri Lankan players came negative
The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has also shared the video of the practice session. In this video, coaches and staff are seen wearing kits. The SLC has taken this decision for the safety of the players after the batting coach came positive. However, the corona test report of 21 Sri Lankan players, including Dasun Shanaka, who returned from the England tour, has come negative.
Batting coach and analyst infected with Delta variant
What is worrying for Sri Lanka is that both batting coach Grant Flower and analyst GT Niroshan test positive for the delta variant. This variant of corona is more contagious and dangerous. It is believed that both turned positive in England itself. They have also been similar to the rest of the staff, so there is a possibility of them getting infected too.
Change in the schedule of the series due to Corona
The series also had to be rescheduled due to Corona. Earlier this series was to be held from July 13. The 3 ODIs between India and Sri Lanka will be played on 18, 20 and 23 July. After this, both the teams will play a three-match T20 series on July 25, 27 and 29. All the matches will be held at Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Along with this the timing of all the matches has also been changed.
Sri Lankan team practicing since July 12
The Sri Lankan team went on a tour of England last month. The match referee was found to be corona infected during the T20 series. After this the England Cricket Board had to change all the match officials. The Sri Lankan team returned from the England tour on 6 July. He had to go through a strict quarantine of 7 days.
Since July 12, the players of the Sri Lankan team have been practicing on the field outside isolation. A few days ago, 7 corona infected including 3 players from England were also found. After this he had to field a second-rate team against Pakistan.
Two more groups of players in the bio bubble
In view of this situation of Corona, the Sri Lankan board has already prepared an alternate plan. Two more separate groups of players are placed in the bio bubble. One group is present in Colombo and the other in Dambulla. If needed, the players present in these groups can be fielded in the series against India. SLC hasn’t announced the team yet.
Sri Lanka team may be announced in next few hours
The Sri Lankan board may also announce the team in the next few hours. According to the reports going on in the media, the captain can be changed after the defeat in the limited over series against England and Bangladesh. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka may be given the captaincy in place of wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera. With this, Dhananjay D’Silva can be given the vice captaincy.
90 crore advantage for Sri Lanka from the series against India
The SLC had told that the series against India would benefit him around Rs 90 crore. SLC President Shami Silva told that there were fewer matches to be played earlier. Later we talked to BCCI and made it a 6 match tour. This will give us a profit of about Rs 45 crore.
