The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has named City Soccer star Sandesh Jhingan for the 2020-21 Men’s Footballer of the Year. This seal came on the day of his birthday. The star defender turned 28 on Wednesday and considered the award as the biggest gift he has ever received. Blue Tigers centre-back Sandesh Jhingan received the Arjuna Award last year and this time he was named the Men’s Footballer of the Year.

Sandesh Jhingan, a trainee at St Stephen’s Academy, has played a lot of football for Chandigarh and is currently the lifeblood of the national team’s defence. After the announcement of the award, Sandesh said that when I came to know about this award, it was like a dream come true for me. I was a little surprised, but at the same time very happy.

This announcement happened on my birthday and it is my biggest gift. I am very happy, especially for my family, my parents, my partner and my brothers. Sandesh said that he had a lot to learn from the coach of the national team, Igor Stimek. The coach especially contributed significantly to Jhingan’s growth.

He said that I think I am a good learner and I try to learn from everyone. I learned a lot from coach Igor, I made many small improvements to my game which made me more professional. Coach Igor has also been a brilliant defender of his time and has played at the highest level. He has played in the World Cup and Premier League, I try to learn from him everyday. If I have to say the best thing, I would say that I did better with him defending on the cross.

Was injured on last birthday, this time awardee
The last one year has been very difficult for Jhingan, he got injured and he made a comeback after a lot of hard work. Jhingan said that I remember last year’s birthday. I woke up at 3:45 am and started my workout at 4:00 am. I was working on my rehab and was looking forward to getting back on the field. I motivated myself and my target was to play for my club and country team. I learned many lessons, hurts keep on happening, you have to move on and not be weak.

Now target to play in Asia Cup…Sandesh Jhingan did well in the World Cup Qualifiers and the AFC Asia Cup Joint Qualifiers. The team finished third in Group-E and now the team is in Round-3. Jhingan said that our target is to participate in the Asia Cup to be held in China. We want to make it even better this time and will play in the Asia Cup with full zeal, determination and enthusiasm. We have some fond memories of the Asian Qualifiers.

We just can’t be satisfied or take anything lightly. We will remain positive about the draw and aim to do better than last time. We want to qualify for the Asian Cup with our heads held high.
