Nargis Dutt, mother of Sanjay Dutt and famous actress of yesteryear, was born on 1 June 1929 in Kolkata. She was the mother of Sanjay Dutt and wife of late actor Sunil Dutt. Nargis’s love story with Sunil Dutt is very interesting. Both played the role of mother and son in the 1957 film Mother India. Later in real life they became husband and wife. The special thing is that Nargis used to call Sunil by his onscreen name (Birju) in ‘Mother India’.
During the shooting of the film Nargis was trying to emerge from a breakup with Raj Kapoor and Sunil Dutt was being impressed by her. Meanwhile, the moment came when Sunil settled in Nargis’s eyes. During the shooting, a fire broke out on the set. During this accident, Sunil saved Nargis’s life by risking his life. Nargis and Sunil became good friends after this accident.
Nargis also paid a favor to Sunil Dutt
Sunil Dutt had told in an interview, “Once I was sitting in the studio with my sister and her two children. My sister had a tumor in her throat. Since I was struggling in Mumbai at that time, So I did not know any big doctor. When Nargis came to the studio. She called me. She used to call me Birju. I was very serious at that time.
He asked – what is the matter? I told them the whole thing and said ‘My sister is in trouble, but I don’t know any doctor here.” – “When I reached home late at night, the sister told me, ‘I am going to the hospital tomorrow morning, there I will have an operation. I was surprised to hear this. I asked who is taking me to the hospital, then she said, ‘Nargis ji. She had brought the doctor, after the checkup, I will have an operation tomorrow morning. In this way Nargis ji solved such a big problem in a pinch without telling me. Since then, she had settled in my heart. I felt that Nargis ji was the kind of partner I wanted. “
It is clear that Nargis was impressed by the way Sunil Dutt saved his life, and by treating the actor’s sister, he tried his best to repay this favor.
This is how he proposed for marriage
Sunil Dutt further told in the interview, “One day she came to my place and when she started leaving, I said- ‘Let me drop you home.’ After this we reached Balkeshwar Road via Fiat car via Nepean Sea Road. Then I gathered enough courage to tell him- ‘I want to tell you something.’ She said- ‘Yes tell Birju.’ I told him directly- ‘Will you marry me?’
After this, there was silence in the car. After a while her house came and she left without answering. After that I started thinking that if Nargis ji says no, then I will leave the film industry and go to my village and do farming.”
According to Sunil Dutt, “After some time, one day when I reached home, my sister was smiling. I asked her what happened, then she said in Punjabi – ‘Paji, why did you hide from me.’ I said- ‘Why, what did I hide from you?’ On this she said- ‘Nargis ji has agreed.’ I said- ‘What have you agreed?’ She said – now you keep quiet, you have accepted what you said.
Nargis and Sunil Dutt got married on 11 March 1958. They had three children (Sanjay, Namrata and Priya Dutt). Nargis died of cancer on May 3, 1981, 4 days before the release of son Sanjay Dutt’s debut film Rocky.
