The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to hold the remaining 31 matches of the IPL in the UAE. In the Special General Meeting held on Saturday, it was approved for its UAE to be held in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. According to sources, the BCCI has found a window of 3 weeks for the remaining 31 matches of the IPL. Phase-2 of IPL can start from 18 or 19 September. At the same time, the tournament finals can be played on 9 or 10 October.
However, the schedule has not been announced yet, as the board’s focus is currently on the T20 World Cup as well. Bhaskar.com has been saying from the beginning that Phase-2 will be held in September-October only. Many media reports said that there is no window before December. This is the second time that a season of IPL will be played in two countries. Earlier during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the initial 20 matches of the league were held in the UAE and the last 40 matches were held in India.
Last season, BCCI gave Rs 98.5 crore to UAE
There can be 7 single, 10 double header matches in the league round within 21 days. Apart from this, 4 play-off matches including Qualifier-1, Qualifier-2, Eliminator and Final will be played. Earlier, the 2020 season was also held in the UAE. 60 matches were held in 3 stadiums. This also generated good revenue for the UAE. The BCCI also gave 98.5 crore rupees to the Arab Cricket Board last year in exchange for hosting the IPL.
The IPL schedule will be decided on where the World Cup will be
The BCCI will be seeking a full time of June to consider the T20 World Cup in its meeting with the ICC on 1 June. During this time, the board wants to see whether it is able to conduct the World Cup in the country during the time of Corona. In the 9 cities Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Dharamshala, Ahmedabad and Lucknow are said to be ready, there is bad situation from Corona.
Therefore, the board wants to take stock of the situation in the next one month regarding Corona. If the World Cup takes place in India, in July the board may release the schedule of the remaining matches. If it is agreed to hand over the World Cup to the UAE, then the IPL schedule will also be made accordingly.
After the IPL, the World Cup was also held in the UAE.
UAE has 3 international cricket stadiums in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. In the event of the World Cup being held in the UAE, all the knockout matches and finals of the IPL can be held on the same ground. In such a situation, except one stadium, the remaining two stadiums can be handed over to the ICC about 15 days in advance, ie by 2-3 October.
With this, ICC will also be able to start preparing for the T20 World Cup. At the same time, the third ground can also be assigned to the ICC about a week before 9 or 10 IPL finals.
In 2009 and 2020, all the IPL matches were played on foreign soil.
So far, the entire season of IPL has been played on foreign soil 2 times. In 2009, all league matches were played in South Africa. At that time play-offs were not played, but semi-finals were played. A total of 59 matches were played then. In the final in Johannesburg, Hyderabad Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 6 runs.
At the same time, IPL 2020 was also played on foreign soil because of Corona. 60 matches of the league were held in the UAE. In the final, Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets.
IPL 2021 halted in mid-session due to Corona
In the mid-season of IPL 2021, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha, Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra, KKR’s Sandeep Warrier and Varun Chakraborty, CSK’s bowling coach L Balaji and batting coach Michael Hussey were found corona infected. After this, the BCCI and IPL administration had no other option but to stop the league in the middle session.
