The country has taken a step forward in the direction of next generation communication service i.e. 5G. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has allocated 5G spectrum to three major companies of the country. Now DoT will direct telecom companies to test 5G in cities as well as villages. DoT has approved 5G testing in rural areas as well as urban centers. An official has given this information.
These companies got 5G spectrum for trial
DoT has allocated spectrum for 5G trials to Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea. This spectrum is given for 6 months. According to sources, the state-owned telecom company Mahanagar Telecom Corporation Limited (MTNL) will be allotted 5G spectrum for the trial after depositing a fee of Rs 5000 thousand crore. The source says that telecom companies will be asked for 5G testing in urban centers as well as villages.
MTNL will trial in Delhi
According to a DoT official, MTNL will conduct a 5G trial in the country’s capital Delhi. For this, the company has partnered with C-DoT. MTNL will conduct trials in Najafgarh area of Delhi. The official says that MTNL will be allocated spectrum as soon as fees are deposited. Telecom companies have been allocated spectrum of 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands.
Indian companies can partner with them
DoT has also released a list of foreign companies participating in the 5G trial. Indian companies can partner with Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DoT for trials. DoT has not approved any Chinese company to participate in the trial. According to industry sources, Reliance Jio will be trialing with its technology and Samsung devices.
Trial will be conducted in many cities of the country
Telecom companies will trial 5G in many cities of the country. This includes Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Gujarat and Hyderabad. Bharti Airtel will conduct trials in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Reliance Jio applied for trials in Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat and Hyderabad. During the trial, companies will be able to test Indian applications. This includes tele-medicine, tele-education and drone-based agricultural monitoring. Apart from this, telecom companies can test various 5G devices on their network.
10 times better download speed than 4G
DoT has allocated spectrum for a total of 6 months. It also includes 2 months for equipment purchase and installation. According to DoT, 5G technology is expected to get 10 times better download speed than 4G technology.
13 applications have been approved for trial
Earlier this month, a report said that DoT has approved 13 applications for the 5G trial. The DoT received a total of 16 applications for the trial. The DoT has put a variety of conditions in the trial application approval. This includes using the airwave only for trials. DoT has said that these waves should not be used commercially at all. If companies violate these conditions, they will have to face serious consequences.
