Scientists had been trying to make clones for many years, but could not succeed. Then they thought why not try it on the sheep, but it was not easy either. Scientists had failed 227 times. Eventually he got success and for the first time, the cloning sheep ‘Dolly’ was born. This was such a sheep, which was not born, rather it was made in the lab by scientists.

On 22 February 1997, a team of scientists from the Roslyn Institute in Scotland announced the cloning. Although this cloned sheep was born on 5 July 1996, it was announced 7 months later. The sheep was named after American singer and actress Dolly Parton. This was also the reason. That is, Dolly Parton was very strong and the sheep that was born from the clone was also strong and healthy.

This was the first time that scientists had cloned a cell. For this, the technique of nucleus transfer was adopted. Two sheep were taken in it. One white sheep and the other black-faced sheep. The scientists extracted the nucleus from the white sheep cells and put it into the black-faced sheep cell (egg). Dolly sheep born after this. Dolly the sheep was white when she was born. Dolly gave birth to the first lamb at the age of two. His name was Bonnie. Dolly then produced 5 more lambs.


Dolly died of lung cancer
By 2001, Dolly began to fall ill. His condition became very bad. On February 14, 2003, Dolly was killed with an overdose of drugs. He was given euthanasia ie euthanasia.

When Dolly was born, doctors expected her to live 11–12 years, but Dolly died in 6 and a half years. When the post-mortem was done after his death, it was revealed that he had lung cancer. Sheep often get this disease.

After Dolly’s death, her body was donated to the National Museum of Scotland. Even today his body is kept here in the museum. This sheep was made by Keith Campbell and Ian Wilmut.
