On this day in 1947, British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced the independence of India. Attlee said in his announcement that India would be liberated before 30 June 1948. On 3 June 1947, it was decided that India would be given independence on 15 August 1947. On the same day, it was also decided that with independence, India would be divided into two parts as India and Pakistan.

The country gained independence on 15 August 1947 within six months of Atlee’s announcement. Pakistan came into existence on 14 August 1947, a day before India’s independence.


Attlee also came to India in 1928 with the Simon Commission. He was an MP at that time. This commission for constitutional reforms in India was strongly opposed in the country. At the same, Attlee later became the Prime Minister of Britain. She defeated the Conservative candidate and then prime minister Wiston Churchill in the July 1945 general election. Churchill was against India’s independence, but opened the way to India’s independence after Attlee became prime minister.

How did the partition of the country happen?

Two officers were appointed for partition. HM Patel and Chaudhary Mohammad Ali. A number of officers were appointed below these also. All other officers used to send reports from different areas to Ali and Patel. On the basis of these reports, the two officials used to formulate recommendations for partition. They were sent to the Partition Council set up for partition. Lord Mountbatten was the chairman of this council. On the basis of these recommendations, every thing of the country was divided.

1846: The British annexed Lahore after the defeat of the Sikhs in the Battle of Sobron.

1835: Kolkata Medical College started with the admission of students. This college was established on 28 January 1835.
