Bhuri Bai was awarded the highest award Shikhar Samman of the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1986-87. He was also honored with the Ahilya Samman by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1998.

The 39th Foundation Day celebrations of Bharat Bhavan in Madhya Pradesh’s capital Bhopal began on Sunday. Folk art expert Dr. Kapil Tiwari and painter Bhuri Bai launched it. Bhuri Bai, who joined as the chief guest in this, said that at the time of construction of the Bharat Bhawan, the bricks were transported, whereas today it is a matter of pride to be the chief guest. It is a greater honor than getting Padma Shri. Kapil Tiwari and Bhuri Bai have been announced to be awarded the Padma Shri on Republic Day.

Bhuri Bai sat on the dais in the outskirts of Bharat Bhavan. She is mainly from Pitol village in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh.

My sweat fell in every corner of Bharat Bhavan
Bhuri Bai, who reached the stage, said, ‘I remember everything from Bharat Bhavan, when I hauled goods here, picked up bricks. My sweat has fallen in every corner here. My painting is also installed here. This Bharat Bhavan has seen a journey from my laborer to artist. I stand under the roof where my Guru Swaminathan (famous painter J. Swaminathan) showed his way to art by holding a finger. ‘

Kapil Tiwari said, ‘The great painter, singer, dancer, litterateur, playwright and artiste witnessed this art journey of Bharat Bhavan. I do not consider myself worthy of being a guest. I am glad that I got the privilege of sharing the stage not only with an amazing artist like Bhuri Bai, but Padmashri will also meet with her. Honoring such a hidden talent is definitely a moment of pride. ‘

Shivshekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary, Department of Culture and Tourism said that Bhuri Bai is a real celebrity representing the rich tradition of art and culture in Madhya Pradesh. The entire country is proud to be honored with the Padma Shri.
