Baba Ramdev’s company Patanjali Ayurved said on 19 February 2021 that the Ministry of AYUSH has given certification (recognition) to coronil tablets as an adjunct medicine in the treatment of COVID-19 under WHO certification scheme.

  • Harshvardhan was also present in the program in which certification for coronil was claimed
  • The WHO has already clarified that it has not certified any traditional medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday expressed surprise over Patanjali’s false claim of getting certification from the World Health Organization (WHO) on coronil tablets. The IMA has sought clarification on this from Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, in whose presence the tablet was claimed to get certification. Patanjali has claimed about this tablet that it is effective in treating corona infection and this claim is based on evidence.

Significantly, the WHO has already made it clear that it has not certified the efficacy of any traditional medicine for the treatment of COVID-19. Patanjali Ayurved, a company of Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, said on 19 February 2021 that the Ministry of AYUSH has accredited coronil tablets as an adjunct medicine in the treatment of COVID-19 under the WHO certification scheme. Later Patanjali MD Acharya Balakrishna had clarified via a social media post that the WHO GMP Compliant COPP certificate has been given by the Central Government’s Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). WHO does not undertake to accredit any medicine.

IMA Seeks Information From Minister On Coronil Clinical Trial

The IMA said in a statement on Monday that being the health minister of the country, how appropriate it is for the people of the country to release a false and unproven product. Can you give information about the timing of the so-called clinical trial of this so-called anti-corona product? The country needs clarification from the minister. IMA will also request the National Medical Commission to seek clarification on the blatant violation of the Medical Council of India code of conduct.

Patanjali had also released a research corroborating the effect of coronil.

Haridwar’s company Patanjali Ayurved also released so-called research confirming the effect of coronil in the treatment of COVID-19. Harsh Vardhan was also present in the program in which certification and research paper of Ministry of AYUSH was released for coronil. In this program, the company also said that this is its first evidence based medicine for COVID-19.

Patanjali launched Ayurveda based Coronil tablets on 23 June last year.

Patanjali had said in his statement that under the WHO certification scheme, Coronil received a Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (CoPP) from the AYUSH section of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization. However, WHO South-East Asia said in a social media post that it has neither certified nor reviewed the effect of any traditional medicine for the treatment of COVID19. Patanjali launched Ayurveda based Coronil tablets on 23 June last year.
